DEFINITION

« The social production of habitat (concept developed in Latin America) includes the process and the product resulting from the collective initiative of the people to build their own habitat: housing, villages, neighbourhoods and even important urban areas. » « By processes of social production, the people affected draw plan, implement and preserve the habitats and urban components, finding solutions to problems that arise in their living conditions. »

« Social production is a process centred on the person, using several terms of self-management, from spontaneous individual self-management, the collective production characterized by levels of prices and production, trading, tense participation organization and complex management. » It often involves a joint-venture between communities and local governments, and occasionally with the private sector. « His goals are not lucrative, but seek the resolution of practical problems and so, say the human rights consistent with the principles of human dignity, of State responsibility and justice. »

« The production, improving and managing integrated housing and human settlements centred on the person are present in rural and urban areas. The concept refers and locally implements social capital and stresses the social control over the designation of priorities, planning, construction, distribution and use of the land, housing and neighbourhood. The production of housing community-centric means collective action for the satisfaction of human needs refers to housing and habitat as the culmination of a process and not exclusively as material product; as organic social and cultural product and not as an object of Exchange, as values in the pooling of all partners in the work, time, experience, materials and funds. »

NEW HSP PLATFORM

At the initiative of Urbamonde (Switzerland), a new global platform is being created (2014-2015). The objective of this platform is to develop common tools and methodologies common to

  • Exchange of experiences, or even to develop an international award HSP.
  • Increase the documentation and understanding of existing projects, to relay through various media.
  • Increase recognition and partnerships related to the HSP, notably to participate in Habitat III, UCLG, ICLEI, WUF activities, etc.)
  • Develop financial and technical aid to support the mechanisms of strengthening links between the actors.
