HISTORY OF CITIES – HERITAGE

All urban centers of Eritrea have been affected by thirty years of war and some were seriously damaged. Extreme shortage of housing is further accentuated by the return home of many Eritreans who settled in cities in general. The country also suffers from a serious lack of qualified and experienced in the private sector and a still embryonic. The new state of Eritrea has not yet adopted policies and plans articulated human settlements. National reconstruction evolve towards sustainable development. The Eritrean Government has adopted a cautious and pragmatic approach to learning “on the job” and institutional capacity building. (UN-HABITAT)

URBAN HOUSING

“The country has an urban training / recomposition. Three decades of war against Ethiopia devastated infrastructure in Eritrea, caused significant displacement in relation to the size of the total population and emptied some fertile areas located north of the border with Ethiopia.

“On a statistical basis still very fragile, it seems that the growth of the urban population has experienced a quantum leap in the decade 1990-2000 (5% per year) – then dropped – while population growth slowed . Despite fairly strong variations from one decade to another, the rate of urbanization tends to decrease and becomes negative after 2000, suggesting that the increase in urban population is mainly due to the growth of the population.

“The urban network extends into the agricultural part of the country, as well as along major roads, oriented towards neighboring countries, Ethiopia and Sudan.” (1)
